Train Categories

EC trains, fast trains, regional express trains…. At the first sight, there seem to be many various trains. How to get oriented in the train network? We would like to provide you the basic overview, make you familiar with the differences, to show you what sort of services you can expect and what fare you pay on different trains or what kind of offer you can enjoy.


Railjet xpress (RJX)

  • Seat reservations: Reservations are available, but not required
  • Coach classes: the Business Class, the 1. (First) Class and the 2. (Economy) Class, in each class different services are provided.

Railjet xpress trains are serviced on the route Bratislava – Vienna – Zürich and back. They are composed from Viaggio Comfort coaches. EUROPA EXPRES SBB RJX, EUROPA EXPRES SBB and EUROPA EXPRES ÖBB special offers are available for passengers on these trains.


InterCity (IC)

  • Seat reservations: reservations are obligatory on this train.
  • Coach classes: the 1st Class and the 2nd Class, in each class different services are provided.

The InterCity trains are running again from 11th December 2016. They are operated without state subsidies. A special pricelist and Terms of Service apply to these trains.


SuperCity (SC)

  • Seat reservations: reservations are obligatory on this train.
  • Coach classes: the 1st Class and the 2nd Class, in each class different services are provided, including the onboard portal.

The train on the route Prague – Košice is driven by the Pendolino trainset and is owned by České dráhy. On the Slovak territory, you can travel with this train while paying the regular domestic fare with the SC surcharge. If you decide to use this train for your journey (from) abroad, you pay no extra surcharge and you can also enjoy various discounts and offers for each country.


EuroCity (EC)

  • Seat reservations: Reservations are available, but not required.
  • Coach classes: the 1st Class and the 2nd Class, in the 1st Class, extra services are available

International trains of the higher category. On the Slovak territory, you can travel with this train while paying the regular domestic fare with the EC surcharge of 1 €. It is not required with the network tickets. If you decide to use this train for your journey abroad, you pay no extra surcharge and you can also enjoy various discounts and offers for each country.


EuroNight (EN)

  • Seat reservations: Seat reservations are available, in the domestic transportation they are voluntary, if you travel abroad, the reservation is obligatory. Berth or couchette reservation is obligatory.
  • Coach classes: the 1st Class (only berth coaches), the 2nd Class

International night trains of higher category. On the territory of Slovakia, you can use this train while paying the regular domestic fare without any surcharge. If you decide to use this train for your journey abroad, you pay no extra surcharge and you can also enjoy various discounts and offers for each country.


Expres (Ex)

  • Seat reservations: Reservations are available, but not obligatory.
  • Coach classes: the 1st Class and the 2nd Class

International or domestic trains of higher category. On the territory of Slovakia, you can use this train while paying the regular domestic fare without any surcharge, the same as if you travel on the fast train. If you decide to use this train for your journey abroad, you pay no extra surcharge and you can also enjoy various discounts and offers for each country.


Fast train (R)

  • Seat reservations: Reservations are available, but not obligatory.
  • Coach classes: the 1st Class and the 2nd Class

These are the regular domestic or international day and night long-distance trains. On the territory of Slovakia, you can use this train while paying the regular domestic fare without any surcharge.


Regional fast train (RR)

  • Seat reservations: Reservations are available, but not obligatory.
  • Coach classes: the 1st Class and the 2nd Class

Domestic trains, on which the regular domestic fare is applied. Compared to the fast trains, these trains have shorter routes.


Regional fast train (REX)

  • Seat reservation: Reservations are available in some trains, but not obligatory.
  • Coach classes: usually only the 2nd Class

The domestic or international trains connecting several regions. Compared to the fast trains, these trains usually stop at more stations and stops. The regular domestic fare is applied. You can use the discount REGIONAL. The trains of this category are also part of the Integrated transportation system in Bratislava region. On these trains, the number of zero-fare transportation tickets sold per train is not limited.


Ordinary passenger train (Os)

  • Seat reservations: Not available
  • Coach classes: 2

The passenger trains usually stop at all (or almost at all) the operational stops and stations on the route. The regular domestic fare is applied. You can use the discount REGIONAL. The trains of this category are also part of the Integrated transportation system in Bratislava region. On these trains, the number of zero-fare transportation tickets sold per train is not limited.
