Transport services in High Tatras are provided by two main transport systems operated by ZSSK – Tatra Electric Railways (TEŽ- TER) and Cog Railway (OŽ- CR).
Tatra Electric Railways
Tatra Electric Railways serve two lines:
- Poprad – Tatry – Starý Smokovec – Štrbské Pleso
- Starý Smokovec – Tatranská Lomnica.
Passengers can travel in modern, low-floor electric trains sets complying with the strict European standards.
The first modular electric unit of 425.9 series was launched into operation in 2000. Today, 15 electric, low-floor train sets with the capacity of 200 passengers operate on the line between Poprad – Starý Smokovec – Štrbské Pleso and Starý Smokovec – Tatranská Lomnica.
Cog Railway transports passengers from the station in Štrba to Štrbské Pleso, an important tourist centre in High Tatras. It is the only cog electric railway operated by ZSSK.
The so-called Rail Travel Self-Service System has been launched for Tatra Electric Railways and for the Cog Railway. Passengers are obliged to purchase the tickets before boarding the train and to validate their ticket in a date stamping machine onboard the train.
If you plan to spend more time in High Tatras, we recommend buying a season pre-paid ticket (seasonal rail passes) and travel cheaper.
