First Time in Slovakia?

First of all, welcome!  We prepared a small guide on how to profit from the possibilities we offer. If you are interested and want to know more, do not hesitate to contact us. And enjoy your journey by train.

Where to purchase tickets?

What should I do in case there is not any sales point opened at station ?

If there is not any possibility of purchasing a ticket at station, you can buy your ticket aboard the train without any surcharge. In such case, please look for our train personnel as soon as possible.

There are exceptions:

the Tatra Electric Railways, Cog Railway and the line Žilina – Rajec, where the passengers are obliged to purchase a ticket before boarding a train and to validate it in a stamping machine. On the line Žilina - Rajec only the tickets for Integrated Transport of Žilina need to be validated. Travellers entitled for zero-fare transport do not need zero-fare tickets, only their customer cards.

What discounts are offered?

Children under 15 years of age, students, retired persons receiving social security income and seniors over 62 years of age may travel for free. A registration is necessary and before travelling, you need to purchase a zero-fare ticket (children up to 6 years of age are exception). Please refer here for detailed information. The zero-fare transport is not limited only to Slovak citizens.

What about discounts for people who are not entitled to zero-fare transport?

Here you find a list of domestic fares.

Where do I find the best quality?

Travelling in 1st Class is comfortable and more affordable now. At most international routes or the main domestic route Bratislava - Košice, we offer free bottled water, newspapers or the possibility to book a free parking space. Please, click for more information.

The InterCity trains offer the fastest train connection between Bratislava and Košice and onboard services.

On the fast trains on the track Bratislava – Žilina – Košice, there is also premium 1plus compartment with a hot beverage, bottled water or newspaper included in price of 1st Class ticket and 5 € reservation.

At line Prague – Ostrava – Žilina – Košice, a fast and comfortable SuperCity Pendolino train is operating once a day.

On several regional lines, we use new train units purchased thanks to EU funds. Most new trains equipped with air-conditioning or (typically) WiFi operate on lines Bratislava – Kúty, Bratislava – Leopoldov, Bratislava - Nové Zámky, Nové Zámky – Štúrovo, Nové Mesto nad Váhom – Žilina, Púchov – Horní Lideč, Trnava – Galanta, Nové Zámky – Komárno, Nové Zámky – Prievidza, Leopoldov – Nitra, Košice – Poprad, Prešov – Humenné, Prešov – Bardejov or Humenné – Stakčín.
Modern units are at your disposal in High Tatras region as well.

Where are the most beautiful landscape views from train in Slovakia?

If you like just to enjoy landscape from train, Slovakia has a lot to offer. Long distance lines between Žilina and Košice with mountainous sceneries are very nice. On the track between Banská Bystrica and Turčianske Teplice (Zvolen – Vrútky line) , there are 22 tunnels.

In western Slovakia, the regional line from Nové Mesto nad Váhom to Vrbovce offers nice sights, in central or eastern Slovakia we can recommend tracks Handlová – Horná Štubňa, Zvolen – Kremnica – Diviaky, Hronská Dúbrava – Banská Štiavnica or Červená Skala – Mlynky.
